Lake Mývatn from Akureyri: Craters, Lava Fields and Baths in One Day

4 min read

Dark volcanic craters and lava fields beside blue Lake Mývatn

For a first visit without a car, the six-hour Lake Mývatn, craters and waterfall tour is the clearest choice. It costs €170, is rated 4.6 from 871 reviews, and includes hotel pickup and return. Its description promises lava fields, volcanic craters, geothermal hot springs and mud pools, but not admission to a geothermal bath.

What fits into six hours

Official Mývatn tourism information places the lake about an hour’s drive from Akureyri. It groups Hverir, Grjótagjá, Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall and the pseudocraters among the main sights. A six-hour trip therefore has roughly four hours left after the return drive, including transfers between stops. Expect selected viewpoints rather than every attraction and a full crater walk.

Goðafoss lies on the route east. The tour title names a waterfall but the short description does not identify it, so confirm the exact stops on the booking page. This matters if Goðafoss is the reason you are booking rather than Mývatn itself. If it is, the Lake Mývatn, Goðafoss and Grjótagjá minibus tour names Goðafoss, Hverir, Grjótagjá, Dimmuborgir and the Skútustaðir pseudocraters and costs €124.

Tour or rental car?

Choose the guided trip when you want pickup, no winter driving and a fixed six-hour plan. Drive yourself when you want to walk around Hverfjall, spend longer in Dimmuborgir or add a booked bathing slot. Visit Mývatn says one day is enough for the principal sights in summer, while two or three days allow a slower visit.

The guided option is not ideal for anyone who dislikes frequent short stops or wants a long hike. It is useful for cruise visitors only when its return time leaves a generous margin before all-aboard; the description does not promise a ship-return guarantee.

What the price covers

The listing states hotel pickup and drop-off. Check the booking page for whether food, bath admission or entrance fees are included. Take food or check the planned lunch stop, and treat any spa visit as separate unless the booking page explicitly includes it.

Our recommendation

Book this tour if you have one day, are based in Akureyri and want the volcanic landscape without organising transport. If bathing or hiking is your priority, build your own longer day and reserve those elements separately. See more options on the Lake Mývatn tours page.
