Diamond Circle tours

The Diamond Circle is not one attraction beside town: full routes link Goðafoss, Mývatn, Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi and often Húsavík over a long day. Check the exact stops, because some products use the name for shorter versions.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Lake Mývatn from Akureyri?

Reykjahlíð is about 84 km away, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes without stops in summer. Most guided trips are full-day tours because they add Goðafoss and several lake sights.

Can I see whales from Akureyri?

Yes. Boats leave from the pier below the centre. Some catalogue offers depart from Hauganes, Árskógssandur or Húsavík instead, so check the meeting point before booking.

Are the Northern Lights guaranteed?

No. Tours need darkness and clear sky, and no operator controls either. Summer’s bright nights are not aurora season; routes may change with the cloud forecast.

Is Goðafoss in Akureyri?

No. The waterfall is about 35 km east of town, around 35 minutes by road in summer. Express tours and longer Mývatn combinations offer very different time on site.

Does Akureyri have a beach?

Akureyri has a harbour on Eyjafjörður and geothermal pools, but no ocean bathing beach. Forest Lagoon is just outside town; the volcanic and waterfall landscapes are day trips.

Can I do the whole Diamond Circle in one day?

Guided tours do, but it is a long day linking several distant stops. Read the itinerary: some products use the Diamond Circle name for a shorter selection.
