Akureyri Shore Excursion: What Fits into Your Port Day?

5 min read

Cruise ship beside the quays of Akureyri with mountains across Eyjafjörður

For a short or uncertain port call, choose the 2.5-hour Goðafoss classic tour. It costs €68.40, has 4.7 from 878 reviews and is designed around pickup at Akureyri port. A six-hour Mývatn day gives more landscape, but needs a much larger margin before all-aboard.

Start with the ship, not the attraction

Use the arrival, disembarkation and all-aboard times supplied by your cruise line. Visit Akureyri says most ships berth very close to the centre or about a ten-minute walk away, but a berth change or tender operation alters the calculation. Never build an independent excursion around the port’s scheduled departure alone.

Most cruise calls run from May to the end of September. Busy days can exhaust tours, taxis and rental cars, according to the official visitor site. Reserve an out-of-town trip before arrival and give the operator your ship name.

Three sensible port-day shapes

The short option is Goðafoss. The classic trip lasts about 2.5 hours and leaves time for the centre even on many shorter calls. Its title and summary promise the waterfall and viewpoint, not Mývatn.

The full option is the six-hour Mývatn and Goðafoss shore excursion at €155. Its summary names Dimmuborgir and the Hverir mud pools. Choose it only when your usable time ashore covers the whole tour plus a margin you have checked with the operator.

The low-risk option is Akureyri itself. From the central quays you can walk to Hof, the centre and the old town. Local town buses are free. This is the better plan when the call is short, the weather is poor or mobility within a fixed timetable matters more than distant scenery.

What to confirm before paying

Match the pickup point to the actual quay, not simply “Akureyri”. Ask how the operator handles a late ship and what cancellation rule applies if the port call is cancelled. Confirm the planned return time in writing. A third-party tour does not automatically carry the cruise line’s return protection.

Recommendation

Choose Goðafoss for calls with limited slack, Mývatn for a long confirmed day, and the town for maximum control. Compare Goðafoss excursions before committing your entire call.
